The story of Broken Mirror is presented as a reflection of the rise and fall of a family, which in turn narrates the evolution of a city and a society. The conference, led by Marina Porras Martí, will delve into how Mercè Rodoreda intertwines the lives of a lineage's members with the past, present, and future of the country.
The analysis will focus particularly on the triad of female characters who anchor the novel: Teresa, Sofia, and Maria Valldaura. Through them, Rodoreda explores the connections between the 19th and 20th centuries in her imaginary and the weight of family inheritance.
Marina Porras Martí (born 1991) holds a PhD in Theory of Literature and Comparative Literature, and degrees in Art History and Catalan Philology. She is currently an associate professor at the Faculty of Humanities of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and a member of the research group «Comparative Literature in the European Intellectual Space» at the University of Barcelona. In addition to her academic work, she contributes as a literary critic and cultural journalist for various media outlets.
