A 61-year-old woman died this Friday afternoon in Barcelona's Eixample district after being hit by a car, marking the city's first fatal traffic victim of 2026.

The accident occurred shortly before 3 PM on Friday at the intersection of Vilamarí street and Diputació street. Units of the Guàrdia Urbana (City Police) were dispatched to the scene to draw up the report and clarify the causes of the incident, along with ambulances from the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM).
The Barcelona City Council immediately activated the psychological care services of the Centre d’Urgències i Emergències Socials de Barcelona (CUESB) to provide support to the victim's family.
This is the first fatal victim recorded in Barcelona during 2026. The previous year, 2025, the city registered 11 traffic fatalities: five motorcyclists, five pedestrians, and one cyclist.
The official count maintained by the City Council does not include all victims, as seriously injured people who die days after the accident are not counted, nor are accidents that occur within the Port of Barcelona.
