The Badia Municipal Market will undergo a major transformation, financed with over 1.4 million euros by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, aimed at modernizing facilities and concessions starting in late 2027.
The historic Badia Municipal Market, a commercial hub for residents and nearby neighbors, will be the subject of an intervention valued at more than 1.4 million euros. This investment will be entirely funded by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB).
The main objective is to promote a new model that includes new stalls, leisure areas, and a tasting zone, opening the facility to the city and updating its service offerings. Mayor Josep Martínez Valencia explained that the initiative seeks to enhance the space's positioning as a reference market in the region.
“
"To enhance the positioning as the reference market of the region."
The local Government has invited current stallholders to participate in a working group to prepare the new concessions, which expire in October 2027. This change in concession, although management will remain municipal, generates uncertainty among workers, especially the most veteran ones.
“
"There is a buzz among the staff, because with the new concession we will have to dig into our pockets, beyond the investment planned by the administration. Many things need fixing because it is an old market and has deficiencies."
The works, scheduled to begin in late 2027, foresee structural improvements, space organization, and the expansion of access to the Plaça Major to ensure total accessibility. This process arrives at a time of growing competition from large supermarkets in the western area of the locality.
