The complaint, filed on December 15, details the critical situation in the emergency service, where the maximum capacity of 110 patients is exceeded daily, reaching figures between 170 and 190. The document confirms that on December 9, 170 patients accumulated, 64 of whom waited more than 24 hours, and that an 82-year-old patient died after waiting 40 hours for transfer to a ward.
“"This happens while there are more than 100 beds closed at the Hospital de l'Esperança"
The union delegate for the Federació de Treballadors de Catalunya at the center, Xavier Tarragón, pointed out that prolonged waiting in the emergency room, known as boarding, increases the risk of mortality. Currently, one patient has waited up to 120 hours to be transferred to a ward, when the recommended maximum is 24 hours.
“"The extra time is not neutral; it has pernicious health effects"
Tarragón emphasizes that the problem is not seasonal but structural, and the increase in respiratory viruses in winter only exacerbates it. This constant collapse has also led to an increase in physical and verbal assaults by users against healthcare staff.
