The initiative, spanning the period 2026-2028, reinforces the Generalitat's participation in the multilateral sphere and promotes sustainable urban and territorial development, social cohesion, and multi-level governance. The collaboration between both entities dates back to 2017, when the first memorandum of understanding was signed.
Within this framework, the Executive has also approved the agreement between the Generalitat, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, and the Barcelona City Council to support the United Nations program's headquarters in Barcelona.
The objective of the new memorandum is to continue financing the initiative and fulfill commitments such as supporting and consolidating the UN-Habitat Global Network of Cities for Resilience office in Barcelona, working jointly to address global challenges related to sustainable urban and territorial development and resilience to climate change, and incorporating the regional approach into the resilient cities profiles tool.
This new collaboration responds to the strategic interest of the Generalitat de Catalunya in strengthening its external action and participation in the multilateral sphere, as well as actively contributing to addressing major global challenges.
The agreement also promotes knowledge exchange, the dissemination of UN-Habitat's values and initiatives in Catalonia, the strengthening of institutional capacities, and the incorporation of international experiences into the territory's public policies, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda.
