The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) has awarded the construction contract for a new 400-meter bike lane connecting Esplugues de Llobregat and Barcelona along the Diagonal Avenue, ensuring sustainable access to the future expanded Hospital Clínic starting in spring-summer 2026.
The contract, approved by the AMB Government Board, involves a total investment of 1,725,568 euros. This infrastructure is considered a vital strategic cycling connection to the future Hospital Clínic, which is set to transform the entrance to Barcelona near the Zona Universitària, linking Bicivia axes 7 and 4.
“
"This strategic connection will allow linking this future reference health facility in Catalonia and Spain on foot or by bicycle."
The route runs along the sea side of Diagonal Avenue, linking the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) sports area with Finestrelles - Can Vidalet in Esplugues and northern neighborhoods of L'Hospitalet, such as Pubilla Cases. The Barcelona City Council covers the largest share of the cost (1.4 million euros) due to the complexity of its section, while the AMB funds 70% of the section within Esplugues.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks and will last six months. The project includes 400 meters of cycling path on a single platform, featuring a 2.5-meter wide pedestrian walkway and a 3-meter wide bidirectional bike lane.
“
"Barcelona has one of the most important cycling networks in the State, with 270 kilometers of bike lanes, and we want to continue growing and improving sustainable mobility."
