The Generalitat forced the suspension of the Rodalies service on Saturday, January 25, 2026, after Renfe started operations, ignoring a prior warning from the Government about the inability to operate safely.

Following a marathon meeting, the Department of Territory of the Generalitat announced early Saturday morning via the social network X that the short-distance train service would not start. However, Renfe launched the trains hours later, citing progress in the work, without any communication of service restoration from the Government.

"Safety is and will be the paramount issue in our action."

Albert Dalmau · Minister of the Presidency
This lack of coordination forced the Government to turn the initial message into a governmental resolution. The Minister of the Presidency, Albert Dalmau, and the Minister of Territory, Sílvia Paneque, met with the Ministry of Transport, Renfe, and Adif in the crisis committee to confirm that the trains could not guarantee “safe mobility”.
An agreement was finally reached for the two major public companies of the ministry to coordinate their public communications through the Secretary of State for Transport, José Antonio Santano. This episode strains the trust between the Generalitat and the Ministry amid the ongoing process of transferring Rodalies management, highlighting the lack of collaboration between Renfe and Adif.
