This decrease represents a 1.15% drop in unemployed individuals compared to the previous month, bringing the total to 323,476 people. This figure is 2.5% lower than that recorded in March of last year, confirming a downward trend not seen in a March month since the 2008 economic crisis, according to data published by the Ministry of Labour.
By provinces, Barcelona registered 1,756 fewer unemployed (0.72%), Girona 857 fewer (2.98%), Lleida 220 fewer (1.38%), and Tarragona 944 fewer (2.43%) compared to February.
Regarding hiring, 217,315 employment contracts were formalized in Catalonia during March, of which 44.4% were permanent (96,571) and 55.6% temporary (120,744). This figure represents a 16.1% increase compared to the previous month and a 7.7% year-on-year rise.
Nationally, unemployment also fell slightly to 2.42 million people, with a decrease of 22,934 compared to February, the lowest March figure in the last 18 years. Social Security affiliation in Catalonia grew by 32,415 people in March, reaching 3,882,774 affiliates, a 2% increase over the year. Across Spain, Social Security reached a new record with 21,882,147 affiliates, surpassing 22 million for the first time in seasonally adjusted terms.
These positive figures have been highlighted by officials such as the Minister of Economy and Vice President of the Spanish government, Carlos Cuerpo, and President Pedro Sánchez, who celebrated the news on social media.
