This year's call for aid for the incorporation of the Catalan language in video games has selected 15 titles for consoles, computers, and mobile devices. This subsidy line covers a significant portion of the cost of translation and implementation of the Catalan version of video games. After four editions, the funding has been increased to meet the needs of the companies.
The selected projects primarily include versions for computers, with three projects for Mac. Seven titles will be available for consoles such as Nintendo Switch, PS5, or Xbox Series, and eight are for mobile platforms Android and iOS.
Among the video games soon to be available in Catalan are ‘Scrabble GO’, developed by Scopely, which will allow playing Scrabble on mobile devices. Also notable is ‘El Quixot: Grans Gestes’ (The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote: Great Deeds), a card strategy game based on the work of Cervantes, created by the Cubus Games studio from Igualada. The Dust Games studio contributes the party-style multiplayer game ‘Roombattle’.
In the educational video game sector, recipients include ‘Dino Land’ and ‘Code Land’ from Planet Factory, and ‘The Froggy Bands’ from Tangible Fun, both Catalan companies.
Thanks to these grants, the remastered Catalan version of the 1989 Japanese video game ‘Gaudí: El vent de Barcelona’ (Gaudí: The Wind of Barcelona) will be available. Originally for MSX2 under the name ‘Gaudí: Barcelona no Kaze’, this thriller-themed graphic adventure takes place in various locations in Barcelona and London. It was one of the first international video games set in the Catalan capital and shows a clear fascination with Gaudí's architecture.
With these new titles, the VDJOC portal, which lists all commercially available video games in Catalan, will exceed 300 titles. The website offers classifications by platform and genre, as well as links to online distribution platforms.
