The total solar eclipse on the upcoming August 12th is shaping up to be a key opportunity to transform the tourism sector in the Tarragona region, particularly in Terres de l'Ebre and Priorat.

Economic operators in the region are working together to maximize the benefits of this internationally projected astronomical event. The Starlight Foundation is leading the initiative, emphasizing training and collaboration among various tourism stakeholders. According to Juan Vicente Ledesma, a foundation trainer, astro-tourism is a cross-cutting activity that goes beyond stargazing, integrating sectors such as gastronomy, enology, accommodation, and transport.
This will not be the only opportunity, as two more eclipses are expected in the coming years: a total solar eclipse in 2027 and an annular one in 2028. The areas of Terres de l'Ebre, Montañas de Prades, and Montsant are particularly relevant due to their good sky conditions and low light pollution, making them a potent tourism resource.
The Prades campsite is already experiencing growing interest in this type of tourism. Its manager, Mireia Sans, highlights the importance of coordination and organization to ensure the event's success. The goal is to obtain the Starlight seal to protect the sky's darkness and offer an optimal experience for visitors, attracting astro-tourism as a complement to the existing offerings.
The Vinícola del Priorat also sees a potential 'match' between astronomy and its wine tourism offerings. Damià Fàbrega, the cooperative's manager, explains that they have been working for some time to integrate the night sky into their wine tourism and territorial economic development proposals. The idea is for visitors to Priorat to enjoy both local products and the night tourism experience in a privileged area.
