The Barcelona City Council honored artist and trans rights activist Carmen de Mairena this Sunday by placing a commemorative plaque at Sant Ramon street, her long-time residence in the Raval.

The tribute took place at number 6, Sant Ramon street, where Carmen de Mairena (1933-2020) lived. The event highlighted her role as a symbol of resistance and visibility for the LGTBI community during the 1980s, moving beyond her fame as a television personality to recognize her social impact.

"Carmen de Mairena is not only what she was but what she represented for the Raval and for Barcelona, especially for those pushed to the margins."

Javier Rodríguez · Commissioner for LGTBI Policies
The ceremony included musical performances by drag queens from the iconic venue El Cangrejo. Local authorities, including Culture Councilor Xavier Marcé, attended the event to celebrate the legacy of one of the most charismatic figures in Barcelona's popular culture.
