Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni has detailed his policies to address housing issues and tourist overcrowding, with a clear objective: to reduce cruise ship calls in the city to zero.

The Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, has expressed his intention to reduce cruise ship calls in the city to zero during his term. This measure, aimed at limiting the tourism model, is accompanied by other actions such as regulating tourist apartments and the tourist tax. The goal is to discourage speculative funds and reclaim housing for regulated rentals.
Collboni announced negotiations with the Generalitat to triple the current cruise surcharge, from 8 to 24 euros per passenger per day. This measure, along with reducing the number of cruise terminals from seven to five, is part of his strategy to establish Barcelona as a home port. The mayor believes this model is compatible with the airport expansion, which aims to boost transcontinental flights.
Regarding housing, the mayor indicated that the city has the potential to build 75,000 more homes and committed to increasing the production of protected housing, from 1,000 in the previous term to a projected 6,000 for the next. Measures are also being developed to mobilize vacant properties and offer legal security to small landlords to encourage social rentals.
In terms of security, Collboni highlighted the reduction in crime to levels seen ten years ago, thanks to increased police presence and amendments to the Penal Code. The mayor called for unity against the far-right, labeling it the "great political battle of our time" and expressing the desire to make Barcelona its "electoral tomb."
On the Spanish political situation, the mayor defended the need for President Pedro Sánchez to remain in office, emphasizing the country's progress and the importance of the current legislative term concluding. Collboni is confident that the citizens of Catalonia and Barcelona will be able to assess the different electoral contexts.
