This Friday's plenary session at the Barcelona City Council was notably shorter than usual, with few executive matters on the agenda. The most significant decision was the provisional approval of the metropolitan general plan modification (MPGM), which will allow for a definitive location for the Eixample Fire Station, currently irregularly situated in Joan Miró Park, and the Entença School, which operates in temporary facilities at the former Model prison.
“"This project has a very broad strategic value for the city."
Another point that generated debate was the management of the migrant regularization process. Several municipal groups expressed their criticism of the local executive, especially due to the long queues that formed at the citizen service offices (OAC) in Sant Miquel. The opposition party denounced the "indignity" of the situation, a complaint that was joined by another municipal group.
The plenary also approved Barcelona's adherence to the international network of local and regional governments committed to sustainability (ICLEI), with the support of most political parties. Likewise, the comprehensive special plan to regulate the Muñoz Ramonet cultural center was approved, with the aim of transforming it into a multidisciplinary cultural reference space, promoted by the Muñoz Ramonet Foundation through the public company BIMSA.
Regarding security, a proposal was approved to request the Guàrdia Urbana and the Mossos d'Esquadra to develop a plan against juvenile delinquent gangs. An opposition representative emphasized the need to combine police pressure, prevention and social reintegration policies, and judicial cooperation to dismantle these networks. On the other hand, a proposal by a municipal group to recover the affordable housing promotion model through the transfer of land to cooperatives was rejected, while an initiative to strengthen the "Healthier and more sustainable school canteens" project received plenary support.
