The proposal, approved by the Council of Ministers, now enters a consultation phase with autonomous communities and high courts of justice. This initiative aims to strengthen Catalonia's judicial and fiscal system and alleviate the burden on courts.
This measure follows the expansion of 91 new judicial units implemented in Catalonia this year, which will be progressively rolled out between late 2026 and late 2027 to address the structural overload in various judicial districts.
The Department asserts that modernizing the Justice Administration requires more human and material resources, organizational reforms, and specific territorial planning.
Upon receiving the ministerial proposal, the Department will coordinate with the Governing Council of the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) to determine the territorial and functional distribution of the new positions, proposing adjustments if necessary, following the established collaborative model.
The increase in judicial and fiscal positions addresses a long-standing demand from Catalonia for a judicial system sized according to its population, litigation rates, and economic activity.
The Generalitat will continue collaborating with the Ministry, TSJC, the Public Prosecutor's Office, and other legal stakeholders to ensure the final allocation of positions meets the territory's actual needs, strengthens overburdened bodies, and improves response times for the Public Justice Service.
