This initiative by Clínic aligns with the recently approved LGBTIQ+ rights law, which came into force last December. The guide is designed for all healthcare personnel, from doctors to support staff, and seeks to standardize care protocols.
“"The objective of the guide is to provide clinical and care professionals with tools for good practice and good praxis to reduce discrimination."
The need for this resource arose from the detection of various situations where it was necessary to reinforce sensitivity, knowledge, and shared criteria among professionals. The guide addresses fundamental aspects such as respectful communication, confidentiality, and the correct use of the chosen name, a crucial point for patient comfort, as highlighted by Noa Florensa.
Key recommendations include registering the chosen name in the medical record, assigning rooms based on the person's felt gender, and making the hospital a visibly safe space through inclusive signage, such as non-binary restrooms. Emphasis is also placed on using surnames in the waiting room to avoid confusion with names not updated in official documentation.
The guide also sets out guidelines on what not to do, such as ignoring the chosen name or pronouns, asking invasive questions not relevant to diagnosis, automatically referring to psychiatry, pressuring to "come out," or allowing offensive comments.
