Around 500 healthcare professionals gathered this Friday, March 20, 2026, at Barcelona's Hospital del Mar before marching to the Catalan Parliament to join forces with the education sector.

Organized by the Metges de Catalunya union, this marks the ninth day of strikes since October. Protesters, wearing their signature white coats, demanded a 'real dialogue' with the Department of Health and immediate structural measures to prevent professional burnout and system collapse.

"The conflict will not end until there is direct and real negotiation with the administration to improve one of the basic pillars of the welfare state."

Xavier Lleonart · General Secretary of Metges de Catalunya
Official figures from the Generalitat de Catalunya placed strike participation at 6.7%, while the union reported a much higher turnout of 35% across Catalonia. In Barcelona, the union estimated that 40% of doctors joined the strike, with significant participation also recorded in Girona, Tarragona, and Lleida.
