After 60 years of neighborhood demands, the Coordinadora Pro Museu Transport de Barcelona insists on locating the facility in Palau 1 of the Montjuïc trade fair grounds, in Plaça d'Espanya. However, this project clashes with the Barcelona City Council's plans to renovate the area by 2029, coinciding with the centenary of the 1929 International Exhibition, and to build over 500 apartments.
This morning, First Deputy Mayor and President of TMB, Laia Bonet, firmly rejected the Montjuïc location. Instead, she proposed the Vall d'Hebron slab, an area currently occupied by a parking lot that will be transformed with the new hospital outpatient building and the future Public Health Agency.
“"in transformation, ideal, and which is a balcony at the foot of Collserola from where the city can be enjoyed."
The President of the Coordinadora, Ferran Armengol, expressed his disagreement with the alternative, arguing that the museum requires a central location to ensure the influx of visitors and the interest of sponsors. Furthermore, he argues that Palau 1 would only require “small adaptations” for its operational launch.
“"It must be in a central location to facilitate the arrival of visitors as well as the sponsors."
Despite the municipal government's firm stance, the Coordinadora collected over 4,000 signatures in May, exceeding the minimum required to bring the issue to debate in the municipal plenary session. Armengol's demand that the Plenary, and not the government alone, should decide, is expected to be finally met in the session this January, following two postponements.
