The director of MACBA, Elvira Dyangani Ose, will leave her post in Barcelona this April after the museum's Consortium denied her request to balance the role with a new international appointment.

The decision follows a ruling by the museum's governing body stating that her contract requires exclusive dedication. This prevents Dyangani Ose from completing her term, which was set to end in July 2026, while leading the Abu Dhabi Public Art Biennial.

"It has been an honor and a great responsibility to lead MACBA, although not always easy."

Dyangani Ose, who joined the institution in 2021, was the first woman to lead the museum. Her departure coincides with the end of the exhibition Projecting a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica, a show she personally curated.
The MACBA Consortium, which includes the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Barcelona City Council, will soon launch a public call to select a new artistic director for the contemporary art center.
