This feeling of stress has increased over the last five years, particularly among citizens over 65 years old. The RACC Barometer of Pedestrian Mobility in Barcelona highlights the tensions arising from sharing urban space with bicycles, vans, and scooters.
Electric scooters are the primary source of insecurity for 80% of those surveyed. About 55% of participants feel endangered when leaving their homes or crossing bike lanes due to high-speed scooters failing to respect pedestrian priority.
“"Pedestrians are a vulnerable group."
Pedestrians account for 30% of serious traffic accidents in the city. In 2024, there were 73 serious injuries, and fatalities rose to five in 2025. The RACC recommends expanding pedestrian infrastructure and strictly enforcing speed limits for personal mobility vehicles.
