Renfe plans to invest over 22 million euros between this year and next to expand the workshops in Vilanova i la Geltrú, the main repair facility for self-propelled passenger vehicles in the Mediterranean region.

This significant investment will drive the modernization and adaptation of the complex, which currently spans 67,000 m² with 29,000 m² of covered area. The goal is to prepare the facilities for the arrival of the new 452 units, solidifying Vilanova's position as a key center for railway maintenance at a national level.
First-level maintenance, which includes frequent inspections and repairs due to breakdowns or vandalism, will see an increase from six to nine positions next year. This expansion is the result of a project already in the drafting phase. The 452 units, scheduled to begin circulation in early 2027, require an adaptation of maintenance positions, which will be extended to 100 meters and increased in height to facilitate operator work.
The first phase of the works, to be executed this year, will ensure the maintenance capacity for the new units. The second phase, planned for next year, will involve the demolition of existing sheds and the construction of a new one to house the three additional tracks.
This initiative is part of a broader plan to increase the number of railway maintenance positions in Catalonia from the current 22 to 51 by 2030. Workshops in Vilanova, Sant Andreu, and Ripoll will be expanded, and new ones will be built in Manresa, Sant Celoni, and Granollers, adding a total of 29 new positions.
Second-level maintenance, performed approximately every eight years or after covering more than 1.2 million kilometers, involves the complete dismantling and integral repair of trains. Across Spain, there are only four bases with this capability: in Valladolid, Madrid, Málaga, and Vilanova.
