The Girona Provincial Council and the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) are collaborating to finance the drafting of the Comprehensive Sanitation System Management Plan (PIGSS) for Girona, an initiative by the Girona City Council to enhance wastewater management and meet current regulations.

The PIGSS covers the municipalities of Girona, Aiguaviva, Bescanó, Fornells de la Selva, Palol de Revardit, Salt, Sant Gregori, Sant Julià de Ramis, Sarrià de Ter, and Vilablareix. This plan is crucial for complying with Royal Decree 665/2023, which mandates certain urban areas to control and reduce pollution from sewage system overflows during rain events.
The document will analyze the functioning and condition of sanitation infrastructure, particularly during heavy rainfall, to identify potential overflows and their environmental impact. Based on this diagnosis, clear objectives will be set to reduce water pollution and minimize the discharge of untreated wastewater.
The PIGSS will propose preventive and corrective measures, including improvements to networks and treatment plants, optimization of their operation, and the implementation of nature-based solutions like Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS). It will also define a timeline for actions and consider flood prevention measures due to their close relationship with sanitation performance during rain.
The public company Tractament de Residus i d'Aigües Residuals del Sistema de Girona, S.A. (TRARGISA), responsible for the high-level sanitation service in the Girona system, will oversee the tendering and awarding of the PIGSS drafting contract.
The deadline for submitting the PIGSS to the ACA is December 31, 2028. Subsequently, the plan will undergo a public information procedure and approval by the ACA.
The estimated cost for drafting this Plan is €626,559.26. The ACA has allocated €563,903 to the Girona City Council from the water levy, covering 90% of the cost. The Girona Provincial Council will cover the remaining 10%, amounting to €62,655.93, through a subsidy.
