Girona's Plaça Catalunya will begin to change its appearance before the year's end. Once the pavement renovation works on Plaça Pompeu Fabra, scheduled for November, are completed, the City Council will roll out the new agreed-upon mobility plan. This will involve restricting through traffic, installing an access control camera from Carrer del Carme, and modifying traffic flow on the square's southern lane.
Mayor Lluc Salellas has specified that these changes aim to reclaim the space for more public and community uses, giving greater prominence to pedestrians, public transport, and bicycles. According to Salellas, the measure will allow only local residents, authorized vehicles, and delivery vans to cross the square. Traffic flow on the southern lane will also be modified to facilitate exits towards Passeig del General Mendoza.
These restrictions will have a direct effect on Carrer del Carme, as a "considerable" reduction in the number of vehicles using the final stretch as a shortcut is anticipated. The mayor has admitted that the comprehensive transformation of the street, included in the mandate agreement, will not be executed in the short term, but alternative measures are being designed.
Among the short-term actions to pacify Carrer del Carme are the rehabilitation of the Cristina Cervià footbridge, the improvement of bicycle passage on the Pont de la Font del Rei to connect with the Carme bike lane, and a study to reduce vehicle speed in a section near a pharmacy.
Regarding Carrer de la Creu, two phases of renovation have already been completed, and the third, most complex phase, is planned for 2027. This final phase will include defining the blocks around the Masmitjà school, with the goal of transforming the street into a space more akin to a Rambla.
