The Girona City Council has launched emergency works at Plaça Catalunya, a unique urban space built over the Onyar river during the 1960s.

The square's origins date back to 1929, when Mayor Jaume Bartrina planned a massive market over the river. However, the Ministry of Interior blocked the project due to safety concerns in 1934.
Construction finally resumed in the 1960s, using the original foundations. The platform was completed in 1967, and the name Plaça Catalunya was chosen by citizens in a public poll.
