This project, which is also being developed for introduction in the Olot and Palamós centers, seeks to ensure closer and more equitable healthcare for diabetic patients, addressing one of the most serious complications of the disease.
In an initial phase, the model focuses on patients with active ulcers and complex cases, considered high-risk. Progressively, a preventive aspect will be implemented to care for patients before lesions appear, identifying risk factors and applying orthopedic corrections.
Since October 2025, the functional diabetic foot units at Trueta and Santa Caterina hospitals have treated hundreds of patients. Santa Caterina Hospital has assisted 119 patients with 1,322 interventions, while Trueta treated 87 patients with 774 interventions in 2025, and 49 patients with 535 interventions in the first half of 2026. Figueres Hospital, which launched its unit in May 2026, has already treated 6 patients with 74 interventions.
The units are composed of multidisciplinary teams including complex wound care nursing, podiatry, traumatology, general surgery, vascular surgery, endocrinology, internal medicine, and infectious diseases. They work with common protocols aligned with Primary Care. A Territorial Expertise and Coordination Committee will be established soon.
This initiative is part of the expansion of the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Service from Trueta hospital to the Figueres and Olot centers, and aligns with other collaborative projects of the Girona Hospital Network, such as the critical and semi-critical patient care model.
