The film Sirat, directed by Oliver Laxe, secured two nominations for the 2026 Academy Awards (Best International Feature Film and Best Sound) during the announcement held Wednesday in Los Angeles.

The film Sirat, which was shortlisted in five categories (a record for a Spanish production), finally achieved two nominations. Joy erupted at the Movistar Space on Gran Vía in Madrid, where director Oliver Laxe and part of the team watched the live presentation of the nominations from Los Angeles.

"Sirat takes no hostages, it is radical, audacious... For a film like this to have come this far is a huge achievement. To be one of the five non-English language films, and competing with these movies..."

The nomination for Best Sound is particularly historic, as the responsible team is entirely composed of women: Laia Casanovas, Amanda Villavieja, and Yasmina Praderas. This marks the first time in Oscar history that a nominee in this category is all-female.

"It is wonderful that people we admire congratulate us on the work. They were very surprised by the use of sound in Sirat for the narrative drive it provides."

The film's producers, including the Catalan Xavi Font and partners from El Deseo, Agustín Almodóvar and Esther García, will accompany Laxe to the Dolby Theatre next March 15. Despite the disappointment over the failed nomination for Best Original Music, the director emphasized that visibility is already a success, especially with the U.S. premiere scheduled for February 6.
