The episode of waste accumulation occurred mainly due to the large amount of cardboard deposited by residents after unwrapping gifts from the Three Kings. Thursday was the first day citizens could dispose of this fraction in the multi-fraction containers in some neighborhoods, which ended up overflowing.
“"It is a fact that should not have happened."
The Mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas, confirmed the situation on social media on Friday night, noting that the massive dumping of cardboard and other fractions was compounded by “several vehicle breakdowns” and the difficulty of transporting organic waste to the Pedret i Marzà treatment centers due to road closures.
Salellas requested “additional resources” from the concessionary company, Girona+Neta, to normalize the situation. However, the PP councilor, Jaume Veray, sharply criticized the management, calling the situation a “disgrace” and a “manual of failure in public management.”
Starting Monday, new containers will gradually begin to be installed in the city, replacing the multi-fraction system with separate containers for each fraction. This will allow residents, using a card, to dispose of waste any day and time.
