The Mataró Local Police have removed more than 40 abandoned vehicles from public streets over the last four months in the capital of Maresme to combat urban degradation.

A new operation started this week targeting 18 additional units in critical areas such as Rocafonda, Cerdanyola, and Molins. Key locations include Josep Tarradellas boulevard and the Mata-Rocafonda industrial estate.
The issue is structural, with 300 to 400 cases managed annually. The administrative process is slow, often taking up to eight months from detection to final scrapping, which impacts parking availability and public safety.
Abandoned vehicles cost the Mataró City Council over 150,000 euros per year. Authorities remind citizens that fines for abandoning a vehicle on public roads range from 400 to 4,000 euros.
