The impressive winning streak of the Rugby Club Mataró in the 1a Catalana league was cut short by the arrival of the pandemic in the spring of 2020.

The beginning of 2020 in Mataró was dominated by the success of the Rugby Club Mataró, which led the 1a Catalana, before the global health crisis caused the paralysis of all local sports competitions and facilities.

The Rugby Club Mataró experienced a period of great splendor between December 2019 and March 2020. The team won the Copa Groga and remained the undefeated leader of the 1a Catalana, demonstrating clear ambition, as expressed by player Manu Cabrera. This dominance culminated just before the declaration of the state of alarm.
Other clubs also achieved notable successes during this period. The Rem Mataró was proclaimed champion of the Lliga d’Hivern de Llagut in early January, and athlete Sergi Llongueras won gold at the Trial World Championship in China in November 2019, putting the city on the international map.

The local sports season went from the euphoria of success to total uncertainty and the need to restrict high-level participation.

Starting in March 2020, the sports agenda came to a complete halt. Renowned athletes such as Núria Martínez and Marta Bach participated in campaigns encouraging the population to 'stay at home'. The situation led to the cancellation of key events like Les Santes and the postponement of the Olympic Games.
Entities had to adapt quickly. The Centre Natació Mataró had to significantly restrict high-level participation. Subsequently, starting in June, the gradual opening of some municipal sports facilities began, although the following season, starting in September, was already anticipated to be 'very uncertain'.
