The political party ERC has launched a parliamentary offensive to reverse the decision. MP Mar Besses addressed the Catalan Parliament this week, arguing that the cut ignores the educational quality and the high demand for this public center in the Noguera region.
“"It is a vibrant school with social and educational success. We must prioritize lowering student-to-teacher ratios over eliminating groups."
Local representatives warn that with 115 children expected to start school in Balaguer, reducing the capacity could create a significant imbalance. They estimate that the single remaining group would be almost entirely filled by siblings of current students, leaving no room for new families.
The school's Parents Association (AMPA) has called for families to continue choosing Gaspar de Portolà as their first preference. They believe that only a high volume of applications will force the government to reconsider the current enrollment plan.
