La Baronia de Rialb has become a focal point of debate following the rollout of the PLATER (Territorial Sectoral Plan for the Implementation of Renewable Energies). The municipality's residents express deep unease about the possibility of the area becoming an "energy sacrifice zone," demanding that the territory's future be decided with citizen participation and respect for its heritage.
The initial lack of information and transparency has generated alarm among affected residents. Although the Town Council of La Baronia de Rialb recently held an informational meeting attended by about 35 people, the invitation did not reach all inhabitants, intensifying the feeling of exclusion.
The municipality, known for its privileged natural environment, sustainable rural tourism model, and the significant role of its agricultural and livestock farms as economic drivers, sees its landscape and productive land threatened by large-scale photovoltaic and wind turbine projects proposed by the Generalitat.
In light of this situation, residents find a lack of a stronger stance from the municipal government. The meeting did not clearly oppose the project, contrasting with the actions of other Catalan town councils that are organizing to halt a centralized plan they consider an overreach of municipal powers and detrimental to the primary sector.
Residents argue that while energy transition is necessary, it should prioritize installations on rooftops, industrial estates, and already degraded areas, thereby avoiding the sacrifice of food sovereignty and the destruction of the region's scenic and ecological appeal.
Finally, a call is made to the Town Council of La Baronia de Rialb to listen to its residents, clearly oppose the PLATER deployment model, and submit strong objections. Private citizens also announce their intention to file objections with the Generalitat and ICAEN.
