The approval of the pact, the largest trade agreement ever signed by the community bloc, occurred during a meeting of ambassadors from the 27 member states. Italy's vote was decisive, as it aligned with Spain and Germany to tip the balance toward 'yes', securing the necessary qualified majority.
The decision was made despite the clear opposition of countries such as France and Poland, which voted against along with Hungary, Ireland, and Austria. This authorization allows European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen to travel soon to Paraguay for the definitive signing of the agreement.
This ratification occurs amid high tensions in the European primary sector. Farmers, including those in the Pla d'Urgell region, maintain road closures, such as the one on the A-2 near Fondarella, arguing that the Mercosur pact creates unfair competition for local products.
