The blockade of the A-2 in Fondarella (Pla d'Urgell) began on Thursday around 11:30 AM, being the latest protest of the day. Initially, farmers planned only to block the Barcelona direction, but in a quick assembly, they decided to cut the road in both directions around 12:30 PM.
The protest is driven by Revolta Pagesa, supported by the unions Asaja and Unió de Pagesos. The agricultural organizations denounce that the agreement between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur, expected to be signed this week, will lead to a loss of competitiveness for the Catalan sector.
The gathered farmers also warn about the risk to food safety. They state that imported food from Latin American countries is not subject to the same safety controls as products produced in Catalonia.
In an assembly held in the afternoon, the protesters agreed to spend the night on the road. A new meeting is scheduled for 9 AM on Friday to decide whether to lift the blockade and head to Tarragona, where Minister Òscar Ordeig is expected to be present.
The blockade forced the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan Police) to divert highway traffic. The disruption affects traffic from Bell-lloc d'Urgell towards Barcelona and from Golmés towards Lleida, causing congestion on the N-II near Mollerussa and Bell-lloc.
