The intention to bring the Davis Cup to Lleida for the third time in its history was one of the campaign promises of Jorge Culleré, elected president on March 26. Since taking office, Culleré has already held discussions with federations to express the club's interest in hosting this important national team tennis event.
“"I can confirm that we have initiated conversations to bring a Davis Cup tie within this four-year period. There is a preliminary tie before the finals that is always available, and a favorable circumstance could arise for us to bring the Davis Cup back to Lleida."
The potential tie would take place in spring or September, and the exact date would depend on Spain's opponent, as they could play either at home or away. The new president of CT Lleida emphasized the desire to once again position the club among the elite, regretting the loss of prominence in international tournaments in recent years, with the exception of the Catalonia Open two years ago.
In addition to the Davis Cup, the new board of directors prioritizes organizing smaller tournaments, especially for promising young players, such as the Futures or Challenger events. Culleré hopes these events can be held as soon as possible, even this year, if there is availability in the Catalan calendar.
With only two weeks in office, Culleré has expressed an optimistic view of the club's current state, while firmly intending to improve it. The goal is to recover the essence, excellence in service and treatment, and enhance aspects such as the bar restaurant and the school, to re-establish CT Lleida's traditional leadership at provincial, Catalan, and Spanish levels.
Club Tennis Lleida boasts a rich history in organizing international events. It has hosted two Davis Cup ties (in 1981 against Monaco and in 1999 against Brazil, with the participation of Lleida native Albert Costa) and three Fed Cup (now Billie Jean King Cup) ties in 2009, 2011, and 2016.
