The operation, initiated by Acuaes, an entity under the Ministry for Ecological Transition (Miteco), aims to prevent the rupture of the reservoir's spillway conduit, located in the Saidí canal. The instability is due to humidity detected in the natural soils where the channel runs, situated next to the dam's right abutment.
“"Humidity has been detected under the channel, and materials are being placed to prevent it from breaking."
An eventual landslide or channel rupture could generate the risk, described as possible but improbable, of destabilizing the slope supporting the right abutment of the dam, which is made of loose materials. This could lead to downstream damage in riverside municipalities of Baix Cinca and Segrià.
Concern over the humidity intensified after heavy rainfall recorded between December and January, with accumulations of 104 to 133 liters per square meter in nearby rain gauges. Nevertheless, Acuaes stressed that the action "does not affect the body of the dam," which remains in good condition. The incident was detected before the winter rains, as the works were awarded to the Valencian company Vilor on December 18 for €402,500.
