The economic situation for many widows in the rural areas of Lleida is particularly precarious. In municipalities such as Senterada, el Soleràs, Bellaguarda, Castell de Mur, Abella de la Conca, and Coll de Nargó, the average widow's pension does not exceed 611 euros. This figure places them below the poverty line, forcing them to manage their finances with less than half the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (1,221 € gross).
Historically, the Social Security system has applied penalties to the contributions of agricultural workers and the self-employed, limiting the calculation bases for pensions. This circumstance, combined with the percentage applied to calculate the widow's pension (between 52% and 75% of the deceased's base), significantly reduces benefits for women who depended on these incomes, which are common in rural settings.
Data from the Tax Agency for 2023 indicates an average gross disposable income of 12,247 € annually (approximately 1,037 € per month with two extra payments). Only a minority of Lleida municipalities exceed this figure with their average widow's pensions. If the Catalan poverty line of 990 euros per month is used as a reference, even fewer municipalities meet these minimums.
