According to INE projections analyzed by the Adecco Foundation, Lleida will gain 23,131 people over 64 years old, while only adding 7,031 inhabitants between 16 and 64 years old. This represents a 22.3% growth for the senior population, contrasting with a 2.2% increase in the working-age population.
The analysis forecasts that Lleida's working-age population will rise from 317,516 inhabitants in 2030 to 324,547 in 2040. Concurrently, the number of people over 64 will reach 127,036. Consequently, nearly one in every four people in the province (24.6%) will be over 64, while the total population will increase by 6.3% to 516,463 inhabitants.
This trend in Lleida is part of a similar scenario across Catalonia. At the regional level, a 2.7% growth in the population aged 16-64 (153,462 more people) and a 23.9% increase in the population over 64 (427,370 more people) are expected between 2030 and 2040.
All four Catalan provinces will see their working-age population grow, led by Tarragona (4.4%) and Girona (4.2%), while Barcelona and Lleida will remain at 2.2%. The aging process will be more pronounced in Tarragona (29.6%), Girona (28%), and Barcelona (22.5%), with Lleida registering 22.3%.
The report warns that this demographic evolution could exacerbate difficulties in filling vacancies and ensuring generational renewal. The Adecco Foundation advocates for retaining and updating senior talent, facilitating the integration of individuals facing barriers to the labor market, and adapting training to business needs.
