The temperature drop has placed the Lleida Pyrenees as the coldest spot in the state, with a minimum of -17.4 degrees recorded at Cap de Vaqueira, according to State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) data. This icy wave particularly affects the Catalan Pyrenean and Pre-Pyrenean regions.
Other locations in the province of Lleida also registered extremely low temperatures, such as -16ºC at Port Ainé, -13.8ºC at Cap de Rec, and -12.6 degrees at Martinet. In the rest of the country, the cold was equally intense, with -16.7 degrees in Pradollano (Sierra Nevada, Granada) and -15.5 degrees in Astún (Huesca).
The area most affected by this glacial wave is known as the 'Spanish cold triangle', with Teruel, Calamocha, and Molina de Aragón as its vertices.
The Aemet has activated the orange cold warning in Barcelona, Girona, and Lleida, with minimums potentially reaching -6°C in the valleys, especially in the Cerdanya. Furthermore, up to -12 degrees are expected in the Valle de Arán and the Girona Pyrenees.
Aside from the cold, strong winds have activated maritime warnings on the Catalan coast. The Empordà is on alert for northern winds up to 75 km/h, with waves of 3 to 4 meters and maximum peaks of 5 to 6 meters. There are also wave warnings in Girona and Tarragona.
