The Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris is hosting the exhibition "Gustave Fayet. Collectionneur – Creador. Iconos del arte moderno" until March 8, 2027. The exhibition revisits the life of collector, artist, and patron Gustave Fayet (1865-1925) and sheds light on the European artistic and intellectual circles of the early 20th century, in which the Lleida-born pianist Ricard Viñes played a significant role.
Viñes' personal diary, displayed at the exhibition, has been crucial in reconstructing Fayet's career. Viñes' presence is particularly notable in La Nuit, one of three large panels created by the Symbolist painter Odilon Redon to decorate the library of the Cistercian abbey of Fontfroide. This monumental composition, depicting around thirty individuals connected to Fayet's circle, includes a portrait of Ricard Viñes alongside Gustave Fayet himself, his family, and other prominent figures of the artistic scene at the time.
The panels Le Jour, La Nuit, and Le Silence were commissioned by Fayet to Redon in 1910 and installed at Fontfroide in 1911. Their exhibition in Paris offers a rare opportunity to view these works outside their original setting and to explore the relationship between visual arts and music.
Having trained in Barcelona and settled in Paris at a young age, Viñes became a prominent figure in Parisian musical life. He was an interpreter closely associated with composers and artists who pioneered new musical languages, significantly contributing to the dissemination of contemporary works and fostering dialogue between music and other artistic disciplines.
The exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton features a total of 728 works and documents. These include pieces by artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Odilon Redon, as well as Fayet's own creations in painting, watercolor, ceramics, and textiles. The exhibition also highlights Fayet's role as a proponent of avant-garde movements and a facilitator of a creative environment where artists from various disciplines shared projects and ideas.
Ricard Viñes' inclusion in this international exhibition, part of the Any Ricard Viñes i Roda (Year of Ricard Viñes), enhances the understanding of his legacy and places him within the European cultural context of his career. It underscores not only his contribution to music history but also his personal and artistic connections with key figures of modernity.
