A total of 15 non-EU doctors at Arnau de Vilanova and Santa Maria hospitals in Lleida are working with limited functions while awaiting the validation of their medical specialties by the Ministry of Health for years.

The health centers in the capital of Segrià, managed by the ICS and GSS, have hired these professionals to alleviate the deficit in key services. There are 6 doctors in this situation at Arnau de Vilanova and 9 at Santa Maria, most of whom are of Latin American origin.
Although the homologation of the general Medicine degree is straightforward, validating the specialty requires a lengthy process, including a nine-month practice period. Hospital management noted that the slow processing by the Ministry of Health in Madrid limits the doctors' functions, posing risks in fields like anesthesiology or surgery.

"We are decapitalizing the country because we train enough doctors, but if the public system works against work-life balance and leads to exhaustion with worse economic conditions, doctors opt for other solutions."

This situation occurs amid labor tensions. The doctors' strike called by Metges de Catalunya and the Professional Association for a Medical and Faculty Statute ended yesterday in Barcelona without an agreement. Approximately 700 doctors demonstrated to demand their own collective agreement and salary improvements, also calling for the resignation of Minister Olga Pané.
