UdL attracts thousands of non-resident students despite not being their first choice

More than 4,000 university students not residing in the Ponent counties are studying at the University of Lleida, according to Idescat data.

The Catalonia Statistics Institute (Idescat) revealed that 4,050 university students not residing in the Ponent counties are studying at the University of Lleida (UdL) during the 2023-2024 academic year, although many chose it as a second option.

Students such as Nayade, Blana (from Igualada), Jana (from Girona), and Jin (from L'Arboç), who are studying Bilingual Primary Education, chose UdL as a second or third option, initially preferring centers in Barcelona or Tarragona. After almost one semester, they are satisfied with the experience.

Idescat data for the 2023-2024 academic year also shows that of the 9,487 university students residing in the Lleida demarcation, 5,325 (56%) study at UdL. The remaining 4,160 opt for other universities, mainly those in the Barcelona area (86.2%).
Of the 4,050 non-resident students studying in Lleida, 1,335 are domiciled in the Barcelona demarcation, 860 in Tarragona, and 180 in Girona. Furthermore, 1,680 come from outside Catalonia, according to the same statistical data.
Regarding territorial areas, 4,935 university students residing in the plain counties study in Lleida. In contrast, all 1,305 students domiciled in Alt Pirineu i Aran study outside their area of residence, with only 315 enrolled at UdL and 825 in the Barcelona metropolitan area.
