The Ibn Hazm Islamic community in Lleida inaugurated its new prayer hall today on Alacant Avenue in Cappont, a space with capacity for 200 people replacing the provisional premises used since 2013.

The new center of worship, located in the Cappont neighborhood, opens its doors today, February 6, 2026, to address the need for a covered space that the congregation had suffered since they had to leave the Palau de Vidre in 2013. Since then, worshippers had been forced to pray in a pavilion and a shed at the Fira de Lleida exhibition grounds.

"On the busiest days we will not exceed a hundred people, and in the summer it will be very difficult to reach 200."

Mohamed Abouchi · Spokesperson for the Ibn Hazm Islamic community
The Mayor of Lleida, Fèlix Larrosa, confirmed this week that the Ibn Hazm community has withdrawn its request to build a larger mosque in the Camí dels Frares industrial estate. This project would have solved the need for greater capacity, especially on Fridays and during the fruit campaign, when more than 200 people gather.
Regarding relations with residents, Mohamed Abouchi celebrated the positive reception from Cappont neighbors, assuring that they will ensure "tranquility" in the neighborhood. The neighborhood association president, Veni Ros, supported coexistence, emphasizing that most Ibn Hazm members are residents of the neighborhood and deserve a dignified space.

"We will monitor that there is good coexistence, as with any other establishment such as bars and nightclubs, which do generate problems but nobody raises an outcry."
