The General Director of Mercolleida, Miquel Àngel Bergés, explained that the decision was driven by the sharp 15-cent drop applied in Germany this week, coupled with the loss of slaughter activity in abattoirs during the Christmas holidays.
“"The sharp drops applied during December have served to give abattoirs margin and allow them to compete in Europe."
Bergés added that, thanks to previous interventions, abattoirs now “have margin and maintain slaughter,” which helps clear accumulated production. While warning that January is a complicated month due to the reaction of other countries, he stressed that Spain remains competitive at these prices.
With this new reduction, the price for select pork is set at 1.052 euros per kilo, the Lleida or normal price at 1.040, and the fat price at 1.028. The sow (verra) maintains its price of 0.40 euros per kilo, and the 20-kilo piglet (garrí) remains at 24 euros, prices that had been stable since December 18, 2025.
