The Department of Health has consolidated the liquid biopsy as a diagnostic test for certain lung cancers in the public network, benefiting nearly 200 patients since its implementation.

The precision oncology model of the public health system has integrated the liquid biopsy, a technique that allows for the analysis of tumor DNA from a simple blood sample. Since its implementation, approximately one year ago, nearly 200 patients have already benefited from this innovative diagnostic tool.
Data published by the Department of Health within the framework of the World Cancer Day reveal the severity of the disease. In 2025, 2,549 tumors were diagnosed in the Lleida counties, representing an increase of 1.9% compared to the previous year. That same year, 1,046 deaths due to cancer were registered in Lleida.

Among women, lung cancer surpassed breast cancer as the leading cause of mortality from this disease, although survival five years after diagnosis reaches 66.2%.

Early detection is crucial. The Pneumology Service of Lleida began a study in May 2023 with 590 volunteers, leading to the detection of 21 tumors, 85.7% of which were in stage I and are, therefore, curable. Physician Jessica González, from Hospital Arnau de Vilanova and Hospital Santa Maria de Lleida, confirmed that a cost-effectiveness study, funded by La Marató, has been initiated.
Furthermore, patients and families are demanding more humane and comprehensive oncological care. The Association Against Cancer in Lleida assisted 1,300 people in 2025, offering psychological and social support, and notes that 45% of patients undergoing oncological processes experience emotional distress.
