Restrictions lifted for nodular dermatosis in 79 Catalan municipalities

The decision, adopted by the European Union, will allow over a thousand cattle farms to resume animal movement, although 165 municipalities maintain preventive measures.

The Minister of Agriculture, Òscar Ordeig, announced the lifting of livestock movement restrictions in 79 Catalan municipalities, following negotiations with the European Commission, due to the improved situation of Contagious Nodular Dermatosis in France.

This measure, effective since this Friday, benefits 1,079 cattle farms which can resume animal movement. Minister Ordeig assessed the situation from Lleida, emphasizing that the decision was adopted after 'intense and long negotiations' with the Ministry and the European Commission, and 'closely supported by the entire sector'.

The decision was made by the European Union's Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed this Thursday, based on a favorable risk analysis. This analysis considers the lack of recent new outbreaks and the high vaccination coverage in Catalonia. The last dermatosis outbreak in France was confirmed on January 2, and in the Girona regions, on January 7.
Despite the partial lifting, restrictions remain in 165 municipalities, affecting 1,065 farms, due to the last outbreak detected in Capmany. If no new positives emerge, this measure could be lifted on February 26. Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture is negotiating solutions to provide aid or flexibility for animal movement in this area.
Minister Ordeig recalled that the vaccination rate in the affected radii is 99% and insisted on the mandatory requirement to have 100% of animals vaccinated before January 31. Failure to comply will result in sanctioning procedures, and he warned that 'If necessary, we will go with the Mossos d'Esquadra to vaccinate with the veterinarians'.
Furthermore, Ordeig confirmed 21 new wild boar positive for African Swine Fever (ASF) within the 6-kilometer radius of Cerdanyola, raising the total number of cases to 85. Following a proposal from the expert committee, a plan will be presented to lift restrictions on people in the natural environment within the 6 to 20-kilometer radius. Additionally, restrictions due to avian flu in the Lleida plain are expected to be lifted on February 11 if no new outbreaks are detected.
