The summer season will bring 50 beaches along the Catalan coast where dogs are permitted to swim, a slightly higher number than last year. Vila-seca (Tarragonès) debuts its first designated zone at La Pineda beach, and Tarragona will also expand its offering with a second enabled beach. Conversely, Cubelles (Garraf) will not have this option this year due to planned construction in the area.
Over 60% of Catalan coastal municipalities, a total of 43, offer some space for dogs on their beaches, with or without time restrictions. La Selva county remains the only one that does not allow access with animals in the summer. Maresme, on the other hand, stands out with 80% of its coastal municipalities offering 13 enabled beaches.
Most of these beaches allow access with animals throughout daylight hours during the high season (June to September). However, some municipalities impose time restrictions. For instance, in Sant Pol de Mar (Maresme) and El Prat de Llobregat (Baix Llobregat), access is only permitted from 8 PM to 8 AM. In Altafulla (Tarragonès), the hours are from 7 AM to 8:30 AM and from 10 PM to 11:30 PM. In Alcanar (Montsià), La Platjola beach allows dogs from 11 AM to 6 PM during the high season.
La Selva is the only county without urban dog-friendly beaches in the summer. Although a pilot project was conducted in Blanes, the City Council has decided against maintaining the zone during the peak season. Maresme has 13 enabled beaches, and Alt Empordà has 11. Tarragonès has 6 beaches, Terres de l'Ebre has 4 in Montsià, and Baix Empordà has 3. Other counties like Garraf, Baix Llobregat, Barcelonès, Baix Camp, and Baix Ebre also offer spaces for pets.
Usage conditions vary by municipality. Some beaches require dogs to be leashed and supervised, as in Torroella de Montgrí (Baix Empordà). Other areas are demarcated with fences and information signs. Vila-seca has marked its bathing zone with buoys, and municipalities like Pineda de Mar already have pet showers. Belis beach in Sant Pere de Ribes (Garraf) is an example of an unregulated space where pet access is permitted.
