This initiative is part of a broader plan at the Catalonia level, totaling 21.5 million euros and benefiting over 50 corridors. Improvements will focus on high-demand lines, such as those connecting Tarragona with Reus and Barcelona, el Vendrell with Barcelona, Gandesa with Barcelona, and Tortosa with Tarragona, among others.
“"We must create a bus plan, improve railway services, and there is also the tram, which is decisive."
The plan will be executed during this year 2026, with reinforcements for the different lines already defined. Additionally, action is planned for other already scheduled lines, such as those connecting Tarragona with Reus Airport, Vespella de Gaià with Tarragona, Salou with La Pineda and Tarragona, and l'Hospitalet de l'Infant with Mont-roig. Improvements based on the mobility study of Conca de Barberà are also included.
These reinforcements will be accompanied by a public passenger transport services plan being drafted at the Catalonia level, in collaboration with the Diputació de Tarragona. The importance of the Tarragona Metropolitan Area (AMT) law to grant it transport competencies has also been highlighted, and municipalities have been encouraged to participate in shaping the new mobility.
Concurrently, the Generalitat has decided to extend interurban bus service concessions for up to six years, which were set to expire in 2028. This extension is conditional on the decarbonization of fleets and service improvement. Concessionaire companies must submit a renovation project within three months, aiming for 75% of the fleet to operate with clean technologies by January 1, 2029. The estimated investment for this transformation is 762 million euros, to be borne by the operators.
