Anthropologist Jordi Moreras and social organizations in Tarragona have warned that the political push to ban full-face Islamic veils is a strategy to incite xenophobia rather than a real social issue.

The debate resurfaced as Vox announced a motion in the Tarragona City Council to ban garments like the burka or niqab. However, Jordi Moreras, a researcher at URV, states that these garments are virtually non-existent in Catalonia and that the proposal ignores the actual reality of the local Muslim community.

"It is not so much a matter of isolation, it is a matter of pointing people out."

Local leaders like La Houcine El Goumri emphasize that religious freedom should be respected, noting that Tarragona already attempted a similar ban in 2010, which was eventually overturned by the Supreme Court in 2013.
