Catalan-Chilean roots united in an emotional tribute and floral offering to Salvador Allende, held at Tarragona's Camp de Mart. The event, organized by the Associació Allende de Tarragona, championed the figure of the former Chilean president and aimed to keep his legacy alive, in front of his bust.
As part of the Onze de Setembre (Catalan National Day), attendees remembered the 53rd anniversary of Allende's death at the hands of Pinochet's dictatorship. The event combined floral offerings with cultural expressions, such as the cueca, Chile's national dance, performed by a couple, and the song L’Estaca by Lluis Llach.
The Mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales, highlighted Allende's legacy, emphasizing that his ideals of a more just, free, and egalitarian society are "more relevant than ever." He quoted the former president: "democracy is a flower that is born in the abyss of a precipice."
Paula Varas and Javier Alvear Varas, from the Associació Allende, opened the event by recalling the enduring relevance of Allende's ideals in the current context marked by disinformation and the rise of the far-right.
The event concluded with the performance and singing of the national anthems of Chile and Catalonia, symbolizing the connection between both peoples in the defense of freedom, democracy, and social justice.
