Culture Minister Sònia Hernández confirmed in the Catalan Parliament that the Ministry of Culture is assessing the load-bearing capacity of the former drying room at Tarragona's Tabacalera, crucial for the provincial library project.

The Ministry of Culture, through the Infrastructure and Equipment Management, is preparing a report to determine if the drying room space in the old tobacco factory is technically suitable to house the reading area of the future Tarragona Provincial Library. Minister Sònia Hernández explained that technicians visited the building on November 28 to assess the total use, as the area will need to support considerable weight.

"An open, permeable space that connects the library with the exterior gardens and invites people to enter, participate, and interact."

The new facilities will occupy 10,565 square meters of the left wing of the Tabacalera, distributed across the ground, first, and second floors. The ground floor is conceived as an “interior rambla” featuring reception areas, an exhibition hall, and an auditorium for 250 spectators.
The first floor will host a “cultural laboratory” dedicated to the bibliographic collection, aiming to make this heritage visible. The Minister defended that the Tabacalera is a “very good location” for the library, as it will generate a new centrality alongside nearby facilities like the Necropolis and the Municipal Historical Archive.
The timeline for drafting the executive project and tendering the works depends on the completion of the functional plan for the facility, which is expected to be drafted in September.
