The Port of Tarragona Authority has launched a strategic intervention at the Castilla Pier to increase its depth to nearly 16 meters, enabling the arrival of larger modern merchant ships.

The project starts with a three-month pilot phase valued at 660,000 euros. This initial stage is crucial to ensure structural stability before replicating the solution across the entire 700-meter pier and proceeding with the final dredging.
Engineers are employing the jet-grouting technique, which involves injecting high-pressure cement into the subsoil to stabilize the foundation. This method creates reinforcement columns up to 5 meters wide, allowing for safe excavation of the seabed without compromising the existing concrete structures.
Environmental safeguards, including anti-turbidity curtains, will be deployed to protect water quality from sediments. This upgrade aims to strengthen the Port of Tarragona as a major economic engine in the Mediterranean logistics network.
